The short answer
As of July 2026, Utah licenses HVAC at the contractor level statewide through the Division of Professional Licensing (DOPL). As of April 20, 2026 the trade uses the H100 HVAC Contractor classification (successor to the S350 specialty classification): qualifiers must hold RMGA or equivalent certification, pass both the Utah Contractor Business and Law exam and the HVAC (H100) trade exam through Prov, and document two years of W-2-verified HVAC-specific experience, on top of the standard specialty-contractor requirements (25-hour pre-license course, $1M/$2M liability insurance, registered business entity).
Do you need a license to work as an HVAC technician in Utah?
Utah licenses HVAC technicians statewide, so one credential is valid across the whole state.
Transition detail: the S350 HVAC specialty classification is being replaced by H100; the H100 rule became effective March 30, 2026 and applications postmarked on/after April 20, 2026 must meet the new requirements (RMGA certification + both exams + 2 years W-2 experience). Under the prior S350 regime no trade exam was required. Utah offers licensure by endorsement for contractors licensed in other US jurisdictions rather than fixed state-to-state reciprocity. Out-of-scope electrical/plumbing work still requires those separate licenses. Federal EPA Section 608 certification applies to all refrigerant-handling technicians.

Renewal period: 2 years, contracting licenses expire November 30 of odd-numbered years
Continuing education: 6 continuing education hours per 2-year cycle, at least 3 of which must be taught live (live webinars count); DOPL rule directs HVAC contractors to take at least 3 of the 6 hours in HVAC-related core coursework.

How does the apprenticeship route work?
No formal apprenticeship-hours ladder in licensing; the qualifier requirement is employment-based, 4,000 hours (2 years) of W-2-documented HVAC work within the past 5 years, which apprentices typically accumulate as employees of a licensed HVAC contractor. RMGA (Rocky Mountain Gas Association) or equivalent certification is now also required for H100 qualifiers.
