Do you need a license to work as an HVAC technician in Kentucky?

Kentucky licenses HVAC technicians statewide, so one credential is valid across the whole state.

Master contractors must maintain insurance per KRS 198B.668. Apprentices and pre-apprentices pay no registration or renewal fee. Federal EPA Section 608 certification is additionally required nationwide for anyone handling refrigerants.

Master HVAC Contractor: Not less than 2 years employed as a journeyman HVAC mechanic under the direction and supervision of a master HVAC contractor; OR not less than 2 years engaged as a master HVAC contractor (or equivalent) in Kentucky or another jurisdiction; OR not less than 2 years licensed and employed as a mechanical engineer (KRS 198B.658(1)).

Journeyman HVAC Mechanic: Not less than 2 years employed in HVAC trades under the direction and supervision of a master HVAC contractor, or 2 years of verifiable HVAC work in Kentucky or another jurisdiction (KRS 198B.658(2)). One academic year of a department-approved curriculum or professional training may substitute for 1 year (max 1 year).

How many hours do you need in Kentucky?

How does the apprenticeship route work?

Apprentices register free of charge with the Division of HVAC, which maintains a register crediting hours worked under a master contractor and journeyman. Experience gained while registered as an apprentice with the Education and Labor Cabinet (in cooperation with US DOL Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training) under a Kentucky-licensed master contractor is accepted toward the 2-year experience requirement for the journeyman license (KRS 198B.658(4)). One year of experience is defined as at least 1,500 hours of HVAC work in a continuous 12-month period (815 KAR 8:010).
