As of July 2026, Ohio licenses HVAC and Refrigeration CONTRACTORS at the state level through the Ohio Construction Industry Licensing Board (OCILB) for commercial work; applicants need five years as a tradesperson (or be an Ohio-registered professional engineer with three years of construction business experience) and must pass a PSI trade exam plus a business-and-law exam. Technicians and journeymen are not state-licensed, and residential HVAC contractor registration is handled by individual municipalities, making Ohio a hybrid state.
