The short answer
As of July 2026, Louisiana licenses HVAC at the contractor level only: the State Licensing Board for Contractors (LSLBC) requires a commercial contractor license with the Mechanical classification when mechanical work (which expressly includes heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration) exceeds $10,000, and home-improvement registration/residential licensure for residential projects at $7,500+ and over $50,000 respectively. There is no state journeyman or technician license for HVAC; individual technicians work unlicensed at the state level (some cities have local mechanical licensing).
Do you need a license to work as an HVAC technician in Louisiana?

How does the apprenticeship route work?
No state license tier exists for technicians/journeymen, so there is no state-mandated apprenticeship-hour pathway for HVAC licensure. The commercial (mechanical) license is qualified by the designated qualifying party passing the trade exam; no specific experience-hour prerequisite is stated on the Board's official pages.
