Journeypersons need 4 years of practical experience through a USDOL-registered apprenticeship plus the state exam; masters need a journeyperson license plus 2 more years and a master exam; contractors must hold or employ a master in each discipline and simultaneously register as a contractor with DIAL. All licenses run on a statewide 3-year cycle with 8 hours of continuing education per term.
Do you need a license to work as an HVAC technician in Iowa?

Renewal period: 3 years, all PMSB licenses expire June 30 on a statewide cycle (current period July 1, 2026 - June 30, 2029), with validity through August 31 as a grace period
Continuing education: At least 8 hours of board-approved classroom instruction during each three-year licensing term (instructors and courses must be pre-approved by the board); licenses lapsed over 366 days require current CEUs or exam retake
How does the apprenticeship route work?
Apprentices must hold an Iowa apprentice license while training and be enrolled in a USDOL-registered apprenticeship program; four years of that registered-apprenticeship practical experience is the qualifying pathway to sit the journeyperson exam (as of 1/1/2010, qualifying experience must come from a USDOL-registered program).
