As of July 2026, Wisconsin is the rare state with a mandatory welder credential: under Wis. Admin. Code SPS 305.34, no person may perform structural welding on commercial buildings (SPS 361-366) or amusement rides (SPS 334) unless registered as a Welder with the Department of Safety and Professional Services. Registration is earned by passing a structural weld test administered by a Wisconsin State-Certified Weld Test Conductor ($15 application + $35 registration) and renewed with a re-test in each welding process every 4 years. Non-structural welding (manufacturing, fabrication, repair) requires no state credential.

What exam does Wisconsin require?

AWS/ASME certifications remain the portable industry credentials for non-structural work.
