California welder license requirements
The short answer
As of July 2026, California does not license individual welders, a welder working as an employee needs no state credential, and qualifies through AWS/ASME certification. However, California is the rare state with a dedicated state welding CONTRACTOR license: any business (including a self-employed welder) that contracts welding work where the aggregate price is $1,000 or more, or any job requiring a building permit, must hold the CSLB C-60 Welding specialty contractor license. Some large cities additionally run their own structural welder certification for permit work, making the overall scheme hybrid: state-licensed contractor tier, unlicensed (or locally certified) individual tier.
Do you need a license to work as a welder in California?
California regulates this trade at the contractor level rather than licensing individual welders.
Reciprocity (AZ/LA/NV) applies to the contractor license only, a trade-exam waiver granted case-by-case; the Law and Business exam is never waived. Renewal fees are for the standard 2-year active period.

How much does a California welder license cost?
Getting a journeyman welder license in California costs $650 in board fees, before any training. That is the application fee and the initial license fee charged once, with renewal charged separately below. No board publishes this total, so it is added up here from the schedule it does publish. An exam is required and its fee is not in that figure, because no amount for it appears in the board material this page is built from. Check the board's current fee schedule before budgeting.

How does the apprenticeship route work?
Individual welders: AWS Certified Welder testing and ASME Section IX qualification; state-registered welding apprenticeships run through California's Division of Apprenticeship Standards (DIR) and union programs (Ironworkers, UA, Boilermakers). Toward the C-60 license, CSLB grants experience credit for a completed apprenticeship program (it can substitute for up to 3 of the 4 required years; at least 1 year must be practical journey-level work), and completing an apprenticeship qualifies a person as a journeyperson for experience purposes.
