Oklahoma welder license requirements

The short answer

As of July 2026, Oklahoma is one of the few states that licenses welders. Under the Oklahoma Welding Act (59 O.S. Sec. 1624 et seq.) and Welding Rules (OAC 380:20), a welder must pass a performance weld test at an Oklahoma Department of Labor (ODOL)-certified weld test facility and hold an ODOL Welder Certification License before performing weldments on welded downstream piping designed to operate above 15 PSI and on new construction, field assembly, alteration, or repair of boilers and pressure vessels. The license renews annually for $25.

Do you need a license to work as a welder in Oklahoma?

Oklahoma licenses welders statewide, so one credential is valid across the whole state.

Statutory/rule basis: Oklahoma Welding Act (59 O.S. Sec. 1624 et seq.; Sec. 1628 covers photo/renewal), OAC 380:20-1-2, 380:20-1-7, 380:20-1-10. Scope covers pressure piping above 15 PSI and boiler/pressure-vessel work; purely structural or ornamental welding outside that scope is not covered by the Act. Weld test cost is set by the private ODOL-certified test facility, not the state, so no exam fee is listed. In-person photo appearance required every 10 years. No reciprocity provisions appear on the official pages. The license does not by itself authorize boiler/pressure-vessel welding for employers lacking ASME/National Board credentials.

What licenses does Oklahoma issue?

The Oklahoma Department of Labor - Safety Standards Division, Welder Licensing Program issues the credentials below for this trade. Boards often list further classes for specialties and business licenses; these are the ones this page covers.

Hours are what each class asks for on its own terms. Where a senior class shows fewer than a journeyman, the board is counting time served after the earlier license rather than from the start; the prerequisite column says which.

What exam does Oklahoma require?

Welder performance qualification test (weld coupons performed to a qualified ASME, API, or AWS Weld Procedure Specification, by category and position). Administered by ODOL-certified Weld Test Facilities (private facilities licensed by the Oklahoma Department of Labor).

How much does an Oklahoma welder license cost?

Getting a journeyman welder license in Oklahoma costs $25 in board fees, before any training. That is the application fee charged once, with renewal charged separately below. No board publishes this total, so it is added up here from the schedule it does publish. An exam is required and its fee is not in that figure, because no amount for it appears in the board material this page is built from. Check the board's current fee schedule before budgeting.

How often do you renew, and what continuing education is required?

Renewal period: Annual, welder licenses expire on the last day of the welder's birth month ($10 late fee up to 1 year past expiration; more than 1 year lapsed requires retaking the weld test). Weld inspector and weld test facility licenses renew by January 1.

Continuing education: None required. Instead, welders must keep a continuity log documenting weldments at least every 6 months to keep the certification active.

How does the apprenticeship route work?

No apprenticeship or experience hours are required for the state welder license, qualification is purely by performance test. Industry credentials (AWS Certified Welder, ASME Section IX employer qualification) and voluntary registered apprenticeships complement the state license but do not substitute for the ODOL weld test.

How does Oklahoma compare to neighboring states?
