The short answer
As of July 2026, Alaska regulates HVAC/refrigeration at the supervisory level: a person may not act as a mechanical administrator without a state license (AS 08.40.260), and mechanical contracting businesses must operate under a licensed mechanical administrator in the relevant category (Unlimited HVAC/Sheet Metal, Unlimited Refrigeration, Residential HVAC, or Heating/Cooling/Process Piping). Qualification is by journeyman-level experience (2 of the last 4 years for refrigeration/residential HVAC; 4 of the last 6 years for unlimited HVAC/sheet metal) plus a PSI-administered exam passed at 70%. Individual HVAC technicians/journeymen are not state-licensed (unlike Alaska plumbers and electricians).
Do you need a license to work as an HVAC technician in Alaska?
Alaska licenses HVAC technicians statewide, so one credential is valid across the whole state.
Alaska has no state-to-state reciprocity agreements, but offers licensure by credentials ($150 application + $200 license fee) for applicants holding a current out-of-state license who passed an equivalent exam. A mechanical administrator may serve only one registered contractor (AS 08.40.280), and mechanical contractors register separately as construction contractors with DCCED. HVAC technicians need no state trade license, but EPA Section 608 refrigerant certification (federal) applies to anyone servicing refrigerant-containing equipment. Total initial state fees are $350 ($150 nonrefundable application + $200 license).

How much does an Alaska HVAC technician license cost?
Getting a journeyman HVAC technician license in Alaska costs $350 in board fees, before any training. How often do you renew, and what continuing education is required?
Renewal period: Biennial; licenses expire December 31 of odd-numbered years regardless of issuance date (biennial renewal $200; prorated $100 for licenses first issued on or after Jan. 1 of the second year of the cycle)
Continuing education: At least one 8-hour continuing education workshop (or equivalent approved study program) covering the Uniform Mechanical Code in effect, per two-year licensing period, for HVAC/refrigeration categories, waived if the licensee passed a licensing exam during the period (12 AAC 39.410)
How does the apprenticeship route work?
There is no state HVAC journeyman/technician license; time worked at journeyman level (including after completing an apprenticeship) is what counts toward the 2-of-4-year or 4-of-6-year experience requirements for the administrator license. Accredited trade-school education can substitute for experience in the Unlimited Refrigeration category and partially in others.
Which states does Alaska have license reciprocity with?
