As of July 2026, New Jersey licenses HVAC at the state contractor level: the State Board of Examiners of HVACR Contractors (Division of Consumer Affairs) issues the Master HVACR Contractor license, required to contract HVACR work or use the title. Qualification is by exam after one of four pathways, most commonly a 4-year U.S. DOL-registered HVACR apprenticeship plus 1 year of journeyperson experience under a licensed Master, or an HVACR-related degree plus 1-3 years of experience. Licensees renew biennially ($160), complete 5 continuing-education credits per biennial period, and must maintain a $3,000 surety bond and $500,000 general liability insurance when offering services to the public.
Do you need a license to work as an HVAC technician in New Jersey?

EPA Section 608 certification is federally required for refrigerant handling. Reinstatement fee $150 plus back renewal fees per N.J.A.C. 13:32A-6.1.
