As of July 2026, West Virginia licenses electricians statewide through the Office of the State Fire Marshal, and the state license is exclusive, municipalities and counties may not require their own electrician licenses. Under the current rule (103 CSR 5, effective May 1, 2024), a journeyman license requires 1 year of experience as an assistant/helper, completion of a US DOL registered apprenticeship, or a 1,080+ hour approved vocational program, plus a 70% passing score on an NEC-based exam; a master license requires 2 years of experience as a journeyman. Licenses are annual, expiring June 30, at $50 per year.
Do you need a license to work as an electrician in West Virginia?
West Virginia licenses electricians statewide, so one credential is valid across the whole state.
State license is exclusive: no municipality or county may require an additional electrician license (103 CSR 5 §3.2). WV also has universal 'occupational license recognition' for WV residents licensed in other states (103 CSR 5 §6.3). Exemptions include industrial-plant in-house work, utility work, and homeowner work on own property. Failure to renew: relicense without retesting possible within 5 years at double the fee. Unlicensed work is a misdemeanor ($100-$500 first offense). Applications now go through the State Fire Marshal online license portal; the $25 figure is the application review fee fixed in the current rule.

What exam does West Virginia require?
Journeyman / Master / Single Family Dwelling electrician examinations (50 multiple-choice questions at 2 points each; 70% passing; NEC-based - 2023 NEC as of Jan 1, 2026). Administered by West Virginia State Fire Marshal's Office (administered at least 4 times/year in Charleston; the Fire Marshal may contract a private testing agent, in which case the agent's exam fee is paid directly to the agent).

How does the apprenticeship route work?
Completion of a US Department of Labor/Bureau of Apprenticeship registered electrical apprenticeship program is a direct qualification route to the journeyman examination (103 CSR 5 §4.2), and apprenticeship completers with 1 year of experience may also receive a one-time nonrenewable 90-day temporary journeyman license without examination ($50). Unlicensed assistants/helpers may work under the direct supervision of a licensed electrician without their own license (max 3 helpers per supervising master/journeyman).
