815 KAR 35:060 provides a reciprocity mechanism (copy of license from a participating jurisdiction plus a letter of good standing), and DHBC has historically had a contractor/master reciprocity arrangement with Ohio, but no current list of reciprocal states is published on the DHBC forms page (the old EL-4 reciprocity application is no longer posted), so no states are listed here. Exam fees are set by the third-party providers (statute caps them at actual cost of examination).

Renewal period: Annual, license valid 12 months, expiring the last day of the licensee's birth month

Continuing education: At least 6 hours of approved continuing education prior to license renewal (815 KAR 2:010), completed during the 12 months before renewal; electrical contractors may not apply a master electrician's/electrician's hours to the contractor CE requirement

How does the apprenticeship route work?

Completion of an approved apprenticeship/training program with a minimum of 288 classroom hours substitutes for 4,000 of the 8,000 required experience hours for the electrician license. Alternatively, completing 2 years of a minimum 4-year approved training program allows licensure, provided the remaining years are completed within 4 years of licensure (otherwise the license is revoked). Apprenticeship training programs are approved by DHBC under 815 KAR 35:090.
