California CDL truck driver license requirements
The short answer
As of July 2026, California CDLs are issued by the California DMV. The $100 original application fee for commercial Class A or B (Class C commercial is $59) covers the commercial learner's permit, three attempts at the knowledge tests, and three attempts at the skills test; the CLP must be held 14 days and is valid 180 days (one 180-day renewal). California layers a state minimum of 15 hours of behind-the-wheel training on top of federal ELDT, and licenses run on a five-year cycle (expiring on the 5th birthday after application).

California licenses CDL truck drivers statewide, so one credential is valid across the whole state.

How often do you renew, and what continuing education is required?
Renewal period: 5 years (licenses expire on the applicant's 5th birthday following the application date)
Continuing education: None for the CDL itself; DOT medical certificate (MER form MCSA-5875 / MEC form MCSA-5876) must be kept current, and hazmat endorsement renewal requires a TSA security threat assessment. Endorsement additions: passenger $100; tank, doubles/triples, or hazmat $59 each.

How does the apprenticeship route work?
No apprenticeship requirement. First-time Class A/B applicants must complete ELDT through an FMCSA-registered training provider, and California additionally mandates at least 15 hours of behind-the-wheel training (federal ELDT itself is performance-based with no hour minimum).
